Mumbai-based SRK has joined global efforts to protect the environment and turned off their lights at all of its facilities during Earth Hour, this past Saturday.
At 8.30 pm on March 27, homes, companies and municipalities across the world turned off their lights for an hour, sending a message on the strength of individual action to tackle climate change.
“Our generation has inherited an incredibly beautiful world from our parents and they from their parents. It is in our hands whether our children and their children inherit the same world,” SRK’s said in a release hours before the event.
Global landmarks such as the Sphinx and Pyramids at Giza, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Gate of India in Mumbai switched off their lights in support of the campaign.

Coping With Crisis The positive economic outlook is a far cry from
this time in 2009, when the slump in global demand for diamonds forced Surat’s
factories to close or downsize and a string of suicides related to those job
losses ensued. India’s diamond industry collectively froze all rough diamond
imports for a month in December 2008 as a means to manage the crisis and
manufacturers were faced with the dilemma of how to respond to the newfound
quiet.
Govind Dholakia, the founder of SRK, recalled that
management at his company had considered laying off up to 50 percent of its
staff when the recession hit, but narrowed that estimate to 20 percent and
eventually, to zero. “We realized that 20 percent of our staff accounted for
just 10 percent of total salaries and that the cuts wouldn’t make much of a
difference in the long run,” he explained. Instead, the company, which currently
employs 5,000 people, gave its staff extended vacation time, which enabled it to
save on other operating expenses, and managed to get through the downturn
without issuing any layoffs. The decision paid off and Shree Ramkrishna is now
in the process of building a new facility that will enable it to accommodate
approximately 7,000 workers across all of its operations.

According to Govind Dholakia,
Chairman, SRK, “During the recession there was panic in the
industry. Many people were sceptical about running their businesses on regular
lines and incurring losses of up to 20, 25 or even 30 per cent. Playing a wait
and watch game, they reduced their production. With that their business
disintegrated.”

De Beers launched its Diamond Trading Company (DTC) accredited business program,
naming four nonsightholders to the project: Livingstones; Premier Diamond
Cutting Ltd.; Richold SA; and SRK. Premier did not reapply
for the current DTC sightholder contract period and the other firms lost their
sightholder status this period. DTC spokespersons said these companies were
fully compliant with De Beers Diamond Best Practice Principles, which means that
they have demonstrated a commitment to business, social and environmental best
practices. The four companies agreed to participate in the associated Assurance
Program, which incorporates independent, third-party verification of their
compliance.

The Diamond Trading Company (DTC)
announced Wednesday that four diamond firms have joined the new DTC Accredited
Business Programme. The four are Livingstones, Premier Diamond Cutting Ltd,
Richold SA and SRK. Members of the program are able to
“enjoy wide ranging support from the DTC and can promote their participation in
the program status in their diamond business activities,” the DTC said in a
release. Further details about the program were not immediately available and it
is not clear if it includes a supply of rough diamonds. According to DTC Sales
and Client Services Director Mahiar Borhanjoo, a number of “very strong
applicants” did not become Sightholders because the DTC did not expect to have
enough rough diamonds to meet demand. “These four companies have been DTC
customers of good standing over many years and we are pleased to be able to
maintain and build upon our relationships with them,” Borhanjoo said, adding,
“we are proud to publicly endorse them as outstanding businesses that have
committed to high standards of ethical and professional behavior.” The DTC said
that to achieve accredited status, the four companies have met the same
stringent Best Practice Principles (BPP) requirements as DTC Sightholders. All
four companies are former DTC Sightholders.

The inspiration for the Divine Cut, which was created by Girish Patel, comes
from the sense of spiritual peace and enlightenment that was prevalent in the
1960s. The shape of the Divine Cut is almost like a curved drop of water. It is
featured in a branded line of jewelry manufactured in Mumbai by the Jewel Goldi
company, a division of the SRK group.

Mumbai-based SRK reached a milestone for Sarin
Technologies LTD as the diamond firm purchased its 100th rough planning machine.
SRK was Sarin's first client to date to reach the triple digit figure. SRK's
Partner and Director of Sales and Marketing, Rahul Dholakia told Rapaport News
that the precision of the new machines allows the company to "derive the maximum
yield from a rough diamond to polished stone." "We know which cut with the
maximum weight and the number of stones is possible to get from particular
rough," he said. "As compared to manual processes the cut and parameters are far
more accurately obtained from Sarin," Dholakia said. SRK's list of Sarin
machinery is valued at $3.5 million, which prompted Israel's Sarin Technologies
CEO Zeev Leshem to present the company with an honorary plaque for the vote of
confidence.

Diamond firms have produced countless diamond cuts down the years, but a cut
symbolizing 1960s spirituality, flower power and peace is a unique one that
Indian Sightholder SRK hopes will strike a chord with
modern-day diamond jewelry buyers.
The firm introduced its Divine Cut collection at the JCK Show that ended last
week, and Business Development Manager Girish Patel, who conceived the cut, said
it received a strong response.
Patel said the company has so far invested $100,000 in the Divine Collection
campaign and that could rise to as much as $1 million in its first year
depending on the market's response to the cut.
A combination of Marquise and Pear cuts, the 63 faceted diamond "takes the shape
of the divine creator, inspiring spiritual freedom and inner peace", Patel said.
"A combination of 6 and 3 is the number 9 which is considered supreme in all
faiths."
The new cut, is being produced in sizes of 0.20 carats and up in color I and
above and SI quality and above. Patel said the new cut gives maximum fire,
brilliance and dispersion.
"We are happy with the response at the JCK show and now we are testing the U.S.
market to see what the response is," Patel said. "We are concentrating on
America for now and if all goes well we may launch into the Japanese market," he
said, adding price points would start at $299 for wholesalers.
The Divine cut will not be sold as loose diamonds but only as part of the
Divine collection which features rings, earrings and pendants.

Pravin Kukadia, partner of V. Goldi
Ltd. in Israel, recalled how eight years ago, there was one-way traffic of
Indians flying to Israel to buy polished. Now, flights are full of Israelis
going to India to buy polished and Indians coming to Israel to buy rough. He
said his firm even supplies Israelis in Israel with polished from Mumbai, a very
big centre for polished, both in terms of supply and in local demand. Another
competitive edge India has is the speed with which business is done. If Israeli
traders do not get their percent, they do not sell. “We’re less expensive in
polished because of cheap labour, low manufacturing costs, equipment costs and
even office supplies,” Kukadia stated. Kukadia commented that V. Goldi’s parent
company in India, Shree Ram-krishna Export, is a major sightholder; however, he
buys rough in Israel — mainly 1+ carats in all sizes and clarities, both
expensive and medium goods — to feed demand from their Indian polishing factory
with its 6,000-strong workers. .
